This exceptional single cask cognac from the mid 1970s is a grande champagne of the highest possible quality. Handmade on a wood fired small alambic charentaise and then kept with great care in a cask until the bottling date 01/08/223. Also this year we succeeded in selecting a complete cask from this great cellar. Which makes it already our third Laurichesse bottling. If you can still recall the first 2, they were very much appreciated (see the reviews on the product pages)! If you haven't noticed this cognac house yet, don't hesitate.

The first nose is instant happiness, an overload of ripe fruit such as papaya, persimmon and candied orange. Touches of stone-old sauternes. On the palate you get this balanced taste, along with a delicious waxiness and oily structure. The wax and oil from an old furniture store. The same effect as walking into a chais in the Charente where you smell the wood of the barrels working. The rancio that makes your mouth water for more, the earthy and mineral notes are present and contribute to the complexity and depth of the aroma and taste. At the finish again a lot of fruit (mandarins), a lot of freshness (mint tea in particular), caramel, all this intertwined into a harmonious whole.

about the producer:
Olivier Laurichesse and Léa are both from Segonzac, this is where their roots lie. Olivier comes from a family with a long history in viticulture and cognac distillation. Olivier continued his studies in wine and oenology and gained his first work experience in Alsace and Médoc and returned to his "own terroir" in 2003. In 2015, Olivier started independently with 40 ha of vineyards located in Verrières and Angeac-Champagne located in the grande champagne, the first cru of the cognac region. Léa obtained a bachelor's degree in wine and spirit trading in 2008 and then went on to do a 3-month internship in New York America for an importer-distributor of spirits. She then resumed her studies at university and in 2010 she met Olivier.

In 2018, a marriage and 3 children later, they launched "laurichesse cognac" together to promote the barrels of cognac that Olivier's father, Guy Laurichesse, distilled in the 1970s (on a small 12 hl alambic). They also now distil cognac themselves from their own vineyards. Guy had handed over the keys to his chai, a hidden cellar at the back of the garden of his residence in Segonzac, to his son in 2018. What makes this cognac unique is that it is a single cask and has not been blended over the years. Very unique spirits that were never commercialized and that only waited for the next generation to convince the enthusiasts of its great qualities and aromas. Grande champagne cognac at its peak!

In the late summer of 2021, during a cognac trip, we went to pick up our daily fresh bread at the bakery on the square in Segonzac. This beautiful municipality is our regular base when we are in France. Here we were pointed out that the neighbor across the street also had a cognac house. For real? Many times we passed this little square without realizing that behind that brown gate a treasure of sublime cognac was hidden. We got in touch and a first visit followed in December 2021. The sweet and down-to-earth owners Olivier and Léa introduced us to their family business. We are very grateful and proud to have this exclusif collaboration!

Uit-fucking-stekend – excuse my French.

Halleluja. Beestig lekker. Erg leuk label, overigens: ‘Le vaillant’, oftewel ‘De moedige’. Reken op zo’n 260 EUR. Nog verkrijgbaar bij Malternative Belgium. Niet twijfelen, doen! Highly recommended!

Knapen Pieter - 08-09-2023 11:18

Ruben Luyten, www.whiskynotes.be, 08/09/2023:
Nose: the same juicy style, full of tangelos, apricots and kaki, with sour cherry and redcurrant in the background. Light hints of potpourri and orange blossom, making this jump out of the glass. Then leathery notes, sandalwood and lemon peels further in the back. Perfect brightness.
Mouth: oily texture, with lots of (tropical) fruits, like mango, tangerines and pink grapefruit. Sweeter quince jam. The fruits go hand in hand with waxy notes, honey and beautiful polished oak. Then subtle mineral notes make it a little drier, alongside rancio notes, saffron and wood shavings.
Finish: really long, on candied citrus peels, hints of brown sugar and a gentle resinous dryness.
Another winner from Laurichesse unearthed by Pieter. Lovely fruits, lovely rancio, easy to recommend.
Score: 91/100
