In the spring of 2021, we got to know this great cognac house and its qualities thanks to a visit led by Mr. Vaudon, cellar master and owner. Pierre Vaudon left a deep impression on us, especially his enormous knowledge, drive, eye for detail and transparency were unseen for me. Even though Malternative Belgium has not been around that long, we think we share the same values. We are therefore very proud and honored to be able to present our 17th release in collaboration with this renowned cognac house.

Lot48 is a cognac coming from a demi-john that was preserved in glass to be kept at its peak, not because it threatened to reach the minimum limit of 40%. This grande champagne from Verrières at 49.2% cask strength is one of those exceptional cognacs that you can very rarely find. The ravages of time have given it so much complexity and finesse, while maintaining a solid body. Just think of ripe pineapple, raisins, quince and peach, the freshness of bergamot. Licorice that raves about light herbs from your own vegetable garden.

about the producer:
François Voyer’s 28 hectares of vineyards are located in the Grande Champagne region, the Premier Cru of Cognac, known for producing eaux-de-vie with aromatic power and qualities suitable for long-term aging. François Voyer Cognac is a family-run Cognac house that is passionate about every detail of its production. The cognac house François Voyer transferred to its cellar master and oenologist Pierre Vaudon in 2017 to perpetuate its identity.
Their cognacs develop the typical aromas as they age. The notes of pear, banana or even blackberry in the white eaux de vie are quickly complemented after distillation by the first aromas of oak from the barrels. This combination reveals floral aromas in the young cognacs, which then develop into fruity aromas (peaches, plums, apricots, walnuts and hazelnuts). The aging process leads to spicy (cinnamon, pepper) and complex notes (leather, incense, cedar). The vineyards are in Verrières and Ambleville, and cognac has been produced there since 1870. There is mainly Ugni blanc planted. But recently Folle Blanche was also reintroduced, for the first results we have to be patient.
10% to 20% of each harvest matures for 3 years in new barrels and then in old barrels to refine the aromas. For this, they use French oak from the Limousin region, but also from forests such as Bercée, Le Gâvre or Reno Valdieu. The natural atmosphere in the cellars is more or less humid and influences the finesse or suppleness of the bouquet. Moisture softens eaux de vie, while dry cellars refine them.Every year, 10,000 bottles evaporate from François Voyer’s cellars. In 1 hour, 1 liter of brandy evaporates from the stock. Through natural evaporation, these cognacs reach 40% full in 50 to 60 years. Distilled water is regularly added to the youngest blends. As a result, young, reduced cognacs will be less dense in flavor than old cognacs concentrated by natural evaporation.
The range is classic, with a range of younger expressions, as well as exceptionally old assemblages and vintage bottles. The House of Voyer cherishes traditional knowledge and has an enormous focus on perfectionism. This combined with hard work and you have an excellent match. Definitely one of our favorite cognac houses as they brilliantly manage to set the bar very high throughout the entire range and bottle absolute uncompromising and very recognizable quality.

Serge Valentin, whiskyfun.com, 25/12/2022:
This post-WWII Grande Champagne had been kept in a demi-john, we don't know when it was drawn out of wood. Montgolfière means hot-air balloon, the Montgolfier brothers having invented that nifty device (first flight in 1783). Colour: amber. Nose: it's a wonderful, aromatic and yet rather earthy and herbal old cognac, with first the much expected quintet of aromas, liquorice, raisins, preserved peaches, camphor and eucalyptus. It doesn't stop there though, displaying many half-dried, half-fermented fruits, especially figs and apricots, plus orange blossom and meadow honey. Some wonderful touches of peppermint and furniture polish in the background. This one's kept all of its original brightness, and yet has become superbly mature. Mouth: I believe they shouldn't have waited another week when they decided to fill this demi-john. Neither should they have done that one week earlier, as there is this slightly fragile, but perfect feeling of equilibrium between everything from the wood and everything from the spirit, plus everything that's been generated by 'the interplay' over the years. Long story short, there's rather a lot of chocolate, also flower jellies and syrups, also many tertiary flavours, rather around teas, herbal Xmas tea (star anise, thyme, clove)… Add to that strong, tannic honeys, such as our beloved chestnut honey. Finish: even in the finish the wood doesn't show as such. Wonderful. Mint, chocolate and chamomile in the aftertaste. Comments: a feeling of liquid thin mints at times. Love thin mints!

Ruben Luyten, www.whiskynotes.be, 11/11/2022:
Nose: un spectacle. This displays a rare finesse and gorgeous hints of polished oak alongside bright fruits. Pineapple and hints of bergamot, with apricots and mangoes underneath. Hints of vetiver and verbena. Then floral honey and aromatic peppercorns. Beautiful.
Mouth: a fruit basket explosion, even more tropical now. Pink grapefruits, passion fruits, quinces and hints of lychee. A few golden raisins but also a bright acidity. Light minty notes and subtle floral touches. There’s a hint of liquorice and nutmeg which adds structure, but again, hardly any wood.
Finish: long, very bright and fresh, with more of that juicy fruitiness coupled to light spice.
This is a future classic. Really exceptional cognac, full of fruits, exactly how we like them. I understand it was a tour de force to present this one, but it was worth the trouble. I’ll link to the Malternative website but I’m guessing it will be gone by the time you read this.
