About this cognac:
Often, a special cognac doesn’t start in a cellar, but with a meeting. During our visit to the Cognac region at the beginning of February, we ended up, through a friendly contact of Marie Foucher, with a small producer with whom we immediately felt a connection. No big house, no polished story, but pure craftsmanship, simplicity and a deep bond with the terroir. The cognac we discovered there, a Petite Champagne '70 from Archiac, a municipality in France that forms part of what enthusiasts sometimes call the Golden Triangle: Verrières, Archiac and Juillac-le-Coq. There is power in this cognac, but also elegance. It has breadth, maturity and an aromatic richness that demands your attention and won’t let go. It’s the kind of cognac that doesn’t shout, but opens up more and more with each glass. A cognac that has taken its time, and that invites you to do the same.

For us, this discovery is exactly what Malternative Belgium stands for: finding casks with a soul, coming from small producers with a real story to tell, who are not shouting for attention but who, with all humility, work and toil hard every day to deliver honest, authentic cognac.

Tasting notes:
Nose: Old wood, dried flowers, fig paste, orange marmalade and a touch of nut cream. Over time, candied peels, fine spices and a light mocha-like depth also emerge.
Palate: Rich and balanced, with pomelo, gentle mandarin bitterness, stewed fruit, dates, black tea and subtle spices. The wood provides grip, while a fresh, almost balsamic tension keeps the cognac lively.
Finish: Long and harmonious, with fresh spiciness, soft honey, dark cherry jam, fruit syrup and an elegant, lingering warmth.

Label explanation:
La Signature - The Signature
You don’t put down a signature just like that. You place it under something you fully stand behind. Something you are proud of. Something that is finished. This cognac is finished. After 55 years of maturation, after decades of care and patience, we join the producer in putting our signature under this result. La Signature is proof that great cognac does not arise from haste, but from trust in the process.

Serge Valentin, whiskyfun.com, 19/04/2026:
A bouilleur de cru’s cognac from the village of Archiac. We are not far from Jonzac, not far from Jarnac, and not far from Cognac either, all of it within a handkerchief, as we say. Colour: full gold. Nose: fruitier, less oriental than the Delamain, more on prunes and currants, dried figs and dates, then a few touches of millionaire’s shortbread and Darjeeling. With water: the wood elements come out elegantly, dried mint, patchouli, eucalyptus, Earl Grey, grey pepper… Mouth (neat): really very fruity, very classic, and we would dare add that it does indeed feel very much like a ‘bouilleur de cru’ thing. Small touches of Italian bitterness beyond the currants. With water: we find the same woody notes as on the nose, especially an Earl Grey and pepper duo, with some chen-pi. Finish: long and really quite spicy at this stage, with several peppers and a hint of black cherry jam, rather like in Itxassou, with a fairly woody aftertaste. Comments: superb, that said, the Delamain had set such an elegant pace. Do not speak to us about the construction of line-ups, and that’s why we often like to do things randomly.

Roger Caroni, Le blog a Roger, 30/03/2026:
Nez
Conclusion

Aanrader!

Ruben Luyten, www.whiskynotes.be, 27/03/2026
Nose: right up our alley. Peaches, hints of lychee, along with seductive flower petals and drops of gewürztraminer. Then candied orange slices, a little marmalade and very bright hints of berries. All this with a beautiful layer of polished wood, along with fine herbs.
Mouth: the marmalade theme is back, with mandarin peelings and (pink and yellow) grapefruit. Some pleasant bitterness with it balanced by subtle peach jam and botrytis in the distance. Great sweet and sour balance. Then a fresh wave of peppermint and jasmine tea, varnish once more, and herbal tea.
Finish: long, with herbal honey, fruit tea and drying oak.
The bitterness on the palate was a little surprising, but I like it. Especially since there are so many nice elements to balance it. Great find.
