A remarkable find that perfectly reflects the essence of our work as independent bottlers.

In September 2024, our quest for exceptional cognacs led us to a special encounter in the Charente region. Through a friendly négociant, we were able to taste a cognac from the private collection of another retired négociant - a man with a great passion for horses who withdrew from the cognac world in the 1990s. This led us to discover what is perhaps one of the most memorable Fins Bois cognacs we have ever had the privilege to taste.

This exceptional eau-de-vie from '45 was preserved until September 2024 in the prestigious vaults of ORECO (Organisation Economique du Cognac), the official guardian of the world's most precious cognac reserves. With more than 1.6 billion liters of stored cognac for 3,391 different owners, spread across 102,000 m², ORECO guarantees the perfect preservation of the finest cognacs from the Charente region. According to ORECO staff, this specific cognac was the oldest ever entrusted to their vaults. With the help of the négociant's children, this exceptional cognac was made available.

Tasting-notes:
Nose: The Adagio. An impressive first impression that immediately sets the tone. The high alcohol content is present but perfectly integrated, testifying to excellent cask maturation. Dried fruit, blood orange, quince, and ginger. There is a continuous evolution and layering. Toffee, salted caramel, pink pepper, and mint. Very intriguing!
Taste: The Scherzo. Builds upon the nose - what a powerhouse! Abundant fruit, walnuts, and roasted almonds. Dark chocolate and tannins, without being drying. Old gunpowder.
Finish: The Finale. Just when you think you've discovered everything, a sixth explosive layer of tropical fruits emerges - mango, papaya, and citrus. Wow! This provides so much freshness and a phenomenal length. Me happy!

Label explanation:
The artwork on the label is inspired by the activities of the retired négociant's children - his son, who is a guitarist with the Paris Philharmonic Orchestra, and his daughter, who is a painter. We see several drops descending, each drop representing a beautiful interplay, a true symphony of flavors and explosiveness. This old cognac is like a masterfully orchestrated symphony - a complex composition that slowly unfolds, with every detail precisely crafted to reach a magnificent finale.

Roger Caroni, leblogaroger.eu, 26/03/2025:
Nez
Conclusion
Score: 92/100

Serge Valentin, whiskyfun.com, 30/03/2025:
A 1945 at 58%? These Belgians are completely mad. We agree that 1945 was 80 years ago, right? In Scotland, they’d hand you the keys of a free convertible Bentley with every bottle, though to be fair, no one would know what to do with it. I mean the Bentley, of course. Anyway, this is a Fins Bois from a bouilleur de cru. Colour: red amber. Nose: astonishing freshness, varnish, cherries, peonies, old sweet wines, Málaga, pineau, Banyuls, then cured ham and Corinth raisins. Impressive. With water: we're fully into old wines now, especially Bordeaux. Peonies, blackcurrant, violet, mint, liquorice, roots… Wow. Mouth (neat): the wood and pepper grab you in a bit of a pincer movement at first, with a huge—really huge, bigly huge—wave of black tea, but that was to be expected. Then comes old chartreuse, very bitter chocolate, old oloroso, strong mint and salted liquorice… What’s impressive is that a certain fruitiness still manages to emerge through this woody onslaught, especially plum and cassis. With water: little change, truth be told. We’d already crossed into another dimension, and we remain there. Finish: banana and varnish—is that possible? Since they had the liquid analysed, could they confirm the isoamyl acetate content? Comments: such fun! Nothing fits, yet everything works. Magical…

Ruben Luyten, www.whiskynotes.be, 21/02/2025:
Nose: spot on, right away. A lot of mead and Manuka honey, with quince jam, a little brass polish and furniture varnish. Then orange peels, blood orange and dried apricots. Caramelized macadamia nuts. A hint of engine oil even. And rich toffee. Glorious composition!
Mouth: quite robust for such an oldie, with excellent richness. It starts on glazed chestnut and some walnut dryness, more blood orange, pink pepper and spiced honey. Then mid-palate a burst of tropical fruits like mango, tangerines and pink grapefruits. Also herbal tea, peppermint and roasted almonds.
Finish: very long, still going strong on mango, orange peels, rancio and mild tannins.
The nose is priceless. After that, the palate is much more powerful and rich than I expected, but it does have wonderful tropical fruits. It simply keeps giving.
Score: 92/100
