After our initial encounter with this prestigious cognachouse at ProWein in March 2023, we were warmly welcomed on May 10th at the estate in Jarnac by Richard and Edouard Braastad, along with Alexis Gonzalez. Behind the majestic gates, we discovered a domain steeped in 150 years of history with prominent Norwegian influences. We had the opportunity to taste several unique casks and dame jeannes, but our attention was particularly drawn to this vintage millésime 1995 Grande Champagne.
As known, vintage cognac is not commonplace, so it was high time to savor another millésime cognac in the glass. It became the 1995 Grande Champagne! Initially, we were informed that this cognac had an alcohol percentage of 50.4%, which we accepted. However, after analysis, it turned out that the angels had been greedy, with an actual alcohol content of 40.86%, an obscurity of 0.38 (indicating no added sugar/caramel/boisée), and 0.2g of sugar/liter (naturally, without added sugars; a side note: cognac can be sweetened up to +/- 12g/l).
Le Vigilant, he who watches over the vineyards around Chateau Triac!
A seductive dance of aromas greets the senses, with dried apricot taking the lead. Gentle hints of peach and milk chocolate embrace the nose, while a subtle floral undertone enhances the complexity. The first sip reveals a rich texture with surprising depth. Dried apricot reemerges, now accompanied by the warmth of roasted almonds. The finish is prolonged and elegant, where newly planed wood emerges as a final tribute to the cask in which this cognac matured. A subtle spiciness lingers, leaving a lasting impression.
About the producer:
For almost 150 years, Tiffon Cognac has represented a heritage of craftsmanship and passion. Founded in 1875 by Médéric Tiffon and Roy, this renowned cognac house has deep roots in the fertile soils of the Grande Champagne and Fins Bois crus. In 1913, Médéric Tiffon's granddaughter (Edith Rousseau) married Sverre Braastad. The family tradition of Tiffon-Braastad, now led by the fifth generation, has withstood the test of time with an unwavering commitment to excellence. Currently, the estate spans over 40 hectares and boasts 13 different chais. Every aspect of the production process, from the careful selection of grapes to the oak cask in which the cognac matures, reflects the rich history and craftsmanship of this venerable house.
