The nose is immediately about dried fruit: raisins, figs, prunes and dates, alongside old wine and grape spirit. Then comes the rancio: walnuts, old wood, dry leather and a touch of varnish. There is plenty of age here, but very little sense of tiredness.

The palate is rich from the very first sip. Sweet, thick and almost syrupy, with figs and prunes, followed by a good dose of rancio, old wood and leather. The spirit is surprisingly fresh and lively for a 1969.

The middle palate goes even deeper into dried fruit, while tobacco, cigar box and an old study gradually appear. What I particularly like is the balance. The sweetness, rancio and freshness all sit together rather nicely.

There is a delicate acidity underneath it all. Nothing really sharp, just enough freshness to keep things moving. It works particularly well with the rancio and dried fruit, giving the palate a curious little tension and stopping it from becoming too heavy.

The finish is excellent. A pleasant bitterness and a touch of tannin give it structure. And then, if you press your tongue against the palate, there is one last big burst of dried fruit, rancio, tobacco, old wood and that lingering freshness. It really hangs around.

What I did miss was density. For something this old and complex, I was expecting a little more concentration and weight. That is what keeps it at 92 rather than going higher.

Still, this is an exceptional old Armagnac. It has the depth and character you would hope for from a 1969, but also a freshness that makes it remarkably easy to drink.

92 points.

Quite simply, the best Armagnac I have had so far.

Serge Valentin, whiskyfun.com, 10/05/2026:

According to the label, this came from a demijohn. That said, the transfer from cask to demijohn only took place in 2023, so we shall let you work out the age yourselves… Indeed, at least fifty-three years old. In short, a youngster. Right then, let us put some Jeff Beck on the stereo… While not forgetting that Castex was also the surname of one of the innumerable prime ministers we have had in France over recent years. A decent fellow, though he did not exactly leave an indelible mark, being far too honest for that. Colour: mahogany. Nose: a soup of stewed fruits dominated by fermented prunes, rather in the style of umeshu, and varnishes, before resinous notes and cigars begin to emerge. It is extremely beautiful, somewhere in the realm of a very great old Port or Madeira. Mouth: oh, this has become entirely tertiary now, with dried meats, malt, malt indeed, tar, forgotten herbal liqueurs, and quite simply an unmistakably glutamate-like side. We seem to recall having tasted some very, very old Cuban rums that had drifted in a similar direction. Finish: long, candied, tertiary, curiously fermentary, somewhere between hoisin sauce and Maggi, perhaps even sauce Périgourdine. Chocolate truffles. Comments: the exact opposite of Le Passeur’s La Poste ’76, yet opposites attract, as Paula Abdul once revealed. Though we are not entirely certain you would identify this as armagnac in a blind tasting.

Pieter Knapen - 02-06-2026 14:55

Nicholas Barker, Serious brandy, 27/05/2026:
Color: Ruby
Nose: Pieter Knapen didn't mince words with this one: "without a doubt the best armagnac [he has] ever had the privilege to taste." That's all I needed to hear, so I got a bottle and dove in to see what the fuss was about. Without any meandering prose--plenty of that to come, naturally--I can see why he's so over the moon just from the nose. This is a cognac lover's armagnac, but it remains decisively rooted in Gascony rather than the Charente. These are the sort of vibrant-yet-integrated fruits that you'd hope for in the best GCs: tropical, ripe, and intense. What really stands out to me, however, is how they're joined by this medicinal, balm-like quality--that means menthol, among other things. If you managed to condense this beautiful dram, you could both eat it and rub it on your wounds. I suspect that this will become even more conventionally armagnac on the palate, but we're off to a flying start.
Taste: Wow, there's a ton going on here, so let's try to touch on everything important. I've developed sufficient experience at this point with aged French brandies that I can usually place them into a slot fairly quickly and then play with the details. It's not that this is so iconoclastic that it defies any such categorization, it's more that it is pulling off so many distinct things. First of all, it arrives with a satisfying juiciness that carries the fruits of the nose onto the palate. As Pieter mentions in his notes, there's not a single defect to be found in the 43% strength. And while you're enjoying the cavalcade of lush fruit pouring in, the development kicks and brings the desired complexity. The medicinal properties that made our pleasant balm on the nose are still present. But there's more. It starts to present things like leather and slightly acidic coffee. Moreover, while the fruitiness on the arrival (like the nose) is decidedly sharp and tropical, it develops into a more armagnac-like assortment of berries and plums. I think that about covers it, but what's so delightful is that each sip seems to emphasize a different part of this complicated whole. Stupendous.
Finish: This clearly has age and some oak, but beyond it being at least 30 years old or so, I don't think you could definitively say the finish (the nose is a different matter) betrays anything so ancient as what we're drinking. Everything is in its proper place.
Comments: If you're Flemish, I trust you implicitly to do, at least, two things: ride a bicycle over cobbles and appreciate great French brandies. Pieter can tell us whether he's a hobbyist Wout van Aert or not, but the bottles from Malternative have long since confirmed the latter proposition. For armagnac, I haven't tried the Pomès de Pébérère he started with, but this is simply magnificent. I'd have to devote more time to this than I have at the moment to determine if it's the best armagnac I've ever had, but I can easily say that if it's not, it's not far off from it. This is a bit pricy, but it's really not out of line with what you'd normally pay for an armagnac of this age (always a bit more than comparable cognacs for some reason), and the quality more than justifies it (and then some). It speaks volumes that my only tiny quibble is the label art is not up to the normally high standard of the brand.

Roger Caroni, Le blog a Roger, 30/03/2026:
Nez
Conclusion

Nu even niet, schat. Papa proeft. En hoewel 450 EUR veel geld is… YODO (you only drink once).

92/100
